CONSERVATIVES, WAKE UP! NOVEMBER 3 COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING!
If Republicans lose control of Congress, don’t act surprised when the opposition uses every available lever of power. The time for applause, excuses, and political complacency is OVER.
By George P. Brooks
🚨 NOVEMBER 3 IS FOUR DAYS AWAY. GET OUT AND VOTE! 🚨
Let me make myself abundantly clear from the beginning: I am sounding the alarm because the Republican Party is approaching a consequential midterm election, and I refuse to sit quietly while conservatives potentially squander another opportunity to determine the direction of this country.
If Democrats take control of the House, the Senate, or both, the political landscape surrounding President Donald Trump’s remaining term could change dramatically. Congressional investigations could intensify, legislative priorities could stall, and the Republican agenda could encounter substantial new obstacles.
Those are not imaginary consequences. Those are the powers that come with controlling Congress.
And if Republicans lose because conservative voters stayed home, assumed victory was guaranteed, or spent more time arguing with one another than participating in the political process, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves.
YOU CANNOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF AMERICA WHILE REFUSING TO PARTICIPATE IN DETERMINING IT!
As a Black Christian conservative, a political commentator, an advocate, and someone actively involved in conservative organizing, I’ve become increasingly concerned about weaknesses within our own movement.
I am not interested in telling Republicans everything they want to hear. I am interested in telling them what I believe they need to hear.
Some people won’t appreciate that distinction. Frankly, that’s their problem.
WE HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF WINNING ARGUMENTS AND LOSING INSTITUTIONAL POWER
Conservatives have developed an extraordinary ability to dominate conversations without necessarily changing the institutions responsible for shaping public policy.
We produce viral videos, host massive rallies, generate millions of social media impressions, and congratulate ourselves whenever a political opponent gets embarrassed in a debate.
Then we wonder why meaningful institutional change remains so difficult.
Here’s a rather inconvenient observation.
WINNING AN ARGUMENT IS NOT THE SAME THING AS WINNING POWER. AND WINNING POWER IS NOT THE SAME THING AS KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH IT!
The political left understands the importance of organization, institutional influence, long-term strategy, and sustained pressure.
Progressive organizations have invested decades in building networks involving education, labor, community activism, political fundraising, legal advocacy, and electoral mobilization.
Conservatives have organizations doing similar work, but we need significantly more coordination between our intellectual arguments, electoral priorities, and community-level activities.
We cannot expect lasting results from a movement that repeatedly confuses political entertainment with political effectiveness.
And we certainly cannot expect to maintain congressional majorities if our voters become complacent every time their preferred candidate wins the presidency.
THE LEFT UNDERSTANDS POWER. DO WE?
Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals remains one of the most recognizable works examining confrontational political organizing.
Alinsky understood something conservatives would be foolish to ignore: political influence requires more than possessing what you believe to be the superior argument.
It requires organization, communication, pressure, strategic discipline, and an understanding of how institutions operate.
His framework also recognized the influence of ridicule in political conflict. Ridicule can diminish an opponent’s credibility and shape how audiences perceive a controversy.
I disagree with much of Alinsky’s ideological philosophy. But intellectual honesty requires recognizing that understanding an opponent’s methods can be useful without adopting that opponent’s values.
Conservatives need to stop behaving as though studying political strategy constitutes ideological surrender.
We need to understand how power operates.
We need to recognize how narratives become institutional priorities.
And we need to learn how to convert our own convictions into practical, lasting political accomplishments.
YOU DON’T DEFEAT A STRATEGY BY PRETENDING IT DOESN’T EXIST!
REPUBLICANS NEED TO GROW A SPINE
I’m going to say something that might offend the perpetually timid members of our movement.
Too many Republicans seem more concerned about being liked by their political opponents than being respected by the people who elected them.
They campaign on principle, arrive in office, encounter resistance, and suddenly discover an extraordinary enthusiasm for compromise.
Now, compromise has its legitimate place in democratic government. Nobody should confuse responsible negotiation with weakness.
But compromising without a clear objective, measurable benefit, or coherent strategy is not sophisticated leadership.
It’s surrender disguised as maturity.
Conservatives should be able to defend constitutional principles, economic opportunity, fiscal responsibility, border security, educational standards, and individual liberty without acting embarrassed by their own convictions.
If we believe in meritocracy, explain why.
If we believe families and communities are essential to national stability, demonstrate how our policies strengthen them.
If we believe government should respect constitutional limitations, apply that standard consistently, including when Republicans hold power.
CONVICTION WITHOUT CONSISTENCY IS JUST ANOTHER POLITICAL PERFORMANCE.
WE HAVE TOO MANY POLITICAL CELEBRITIES AND NOT ENOUGH LEADERS
I’ve said this before, and I’ll continue saying it.
The conservative movement needs fewer people competing to become the next famous commentator and more people preparing to become competent public servants.
Political influence should be measured by more than followers, subscribers, merchandise sales, or proximity to powerful personalities.
We need people who understand legislation, budgeting, coalition building, constitutional limitations, and the actual mechanics of governance.
I’ve worked in political campaigns, nonprofit leadership, media, and community advocacy. One lesson has remained consistent throughout those experiences.
Leadership requires work that most people never see.
It involves preparation, organization, accountability, and a willingness to accept responsibility when circumstances become uncomfortable.
Politics is not professional wrestling, although the similarities occasionally make me wonder.
In wrestling, a performer can generate an enormous reaction without accomplishing anything beyond entertaining the audience.
In government, applause cannot substitute for responsible results.
WE NEED MORE PEOPLE WHO CAN GOVERN AND FEWER PEOPLE WHO SIMPLY KNOW HOW TO GET OVER WITH THE CROWD.
PRESIDENT TRUMP CANNOT CARRY THE ENTIRE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT FOREVER
Let me be clear about something else.
I support President Donald Trump. But supporting Trump does not require believing the entire conservative movement should become permanently dependent on one personality.
A serious political movement must be capable of developing future leaders, strengthening institutions, and maintaining its principles beyond any single administration.
Trump demonstrated that entrenched political conventions could be challenged and that voters frustrated with traditional party structures could become a powerful political force.
But momentum must eventually become organization.
Enthusiasm must become policy.
And electoral victories must become responsible governance.
Otherwise, we risk creating a movement that can generate extraordinary excitement but struggles to sustain its accomplishments.
MAGA CANNOT LIVE ON APPLAUSE ALONE!
CONSERVATISM MUST MEAN SOMETHING BEYOND OPPOSING DEMOCRATS
Here is where I believe our movement has another significant weakness.
We spend an enormous amount of time explaining what we’re against.
But what are we actually building?
What are conservatives doing about failing schools, economic insecurity, fatherlessness, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, and the struggles of disabled Americans?
What are we offering younger Americans who see rising living costs and wonder whether financial independence will ever become attainable?
And how are we demonstrating that conservative principles can produce stronger families, healthier communities, and meaningful opportunities?
I founded Metta Association in 2018 because I believed service and responsibility should be more than political slogans.
For eight years, I have worked with people experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental illness, disabilities, trauma, and extraordinary personal hardship.
That experience has strengthened my belief in personal responsibility, but it has also reinforced something equally important.
Communities do not improve merely because someone delivers an impressive speech about their problems.
They improve when people organize, mentor, serve, build institutions, and accept responsibility for results.
IF WE WANT PEOPLE TO BELIEVE CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES WORK, THEN WE NEED TO SHOW THEM WHAT THOSE PRINCIPLES LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE!
NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS IF CONGRESS GOES BLUE
With the November 3 midterms approaching, Republicans need to understand the potential consequences of losing congressional control.
A Democratic House majority would determine House committee leadership and could launch new investigations, issue subpoenas, and redirect legislative priorities.
A Democratic Senate majority could significantly affect confirmation proceedings, committee agendas, and the prospects for Republican-backed legislation.
Divided government could create additional gridlock over budgets, spending, immigration, economic policy, and other major issues.
A Democratic majority in one chamber would not automatically give Democrats unlimited power, nor would it guarantee that every Republican initiative would fail.
But it would fundamentally alter the political environment.
And conservatives who dismiss that possibility because they believe President Trump’s popularity guarantees continued Republican control are making an extraordinarily dangerous assumption.
Midterm elections have their own political dynamics.
Presidential enthusiasm does not automatically translate into congressional victories.
Candidates still have to campaign effectively. Organizations still have to mobilize voters. And citizens still have to participate.
A PRESIDENTIAL VICTORY DOES NOT COME WITH A PERMANENT CONGRESSIONAL MAJORITY!
THIS IS MY TAKE ON IT:
I am writing this because I want the Republican Party and conservative movement to become stronger, more disciplined, more intellectually serious, and more effective.
I am not interested in blind loyalty.
I am not interested in pretending every Republican politician is competent merely because we share a party affiliation.
And I am certainly not interested in maintaining silence whenever I believe our movement is drifting toward complacency.
I’m a Black conservative because my values, experiences, and convictions led me here. I’m not going to abandon those convictions to obtain somebody else’s approval.
My faith matters. My principles matter. Constitutional government matters. Personal responsibility matters. And America’s future matters.
But none of those things is advanced by sitting around congratulating ourselves while the opposition organizes.
We should be developing leaders, building coalitions, educating voters, strengthening communities, supporting credible candidates, and demanding accountability from every elected official.
Including Republicans.
Especially Republicans.
Because the standard should be effective, ethical leadership, not simply having the correct letter beside someone’s name.
MY FINAL WARNING: NOVEMBER 3 IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL!
Conservatives need to recognize that this election carries consequences extending well beyond partisan bragging rights.
Congressional control will influence the direction of federal legislation, government oversight, spending negotiations, and President Trump’s ability to advance his agenda during the remainder of his term.
State and local elections will also shape policies affecting schools, businesses, public safety, and communities across America.
There is no guaranteed outcome.
There is no automatic victory.
And there is no political movement so popular that it can afford to disregard voter participation.
MY CALL TO ACTION IS SIMPLE:
Know what’s on your ballot. Learn about the candidates. Verify your polling place and voting hours. Exercise your right to vote on November 3 if you haven’t already voted. Encourage your family and friends to participate, and remain involved after the election.
Demand better leadership. Demand stronger organization. Demand practical results.
And remember that civic responsibility doesn’t end when the election results are announced.
WE CANNOT AFFORD TO CONFUSE CONFIDENCE WITH COMPLACENCY, LOYALTY WITH BLINDNESS, OR POLITICAL POPULARITY WITH ACTUAL POWER.
If Republicans lose control, the consequences will be real. If Republicans retain control but fail to govern responsibly, the consequences of that failure will be real, too.
Either way, the responsibility rests with us.
I will continue speaking my mind, challenging my own party when necessary, and defending the principles that brought me into the conservative movement.
Not everyone will appreciate my honesty.
That’s fine.
I DIDN’T GET INTO THIS FIGHT TO BE POPULAR. I GOT INTO IT BECAUSE I BELIEVE AMERICA IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR!
November 3 is almost here.
GET INFORMED. GET INVOLVED. GET OUT AND VOTE.
And after the ballots are counted, let’s get back to the much harder work of building the kind of country we claim to believe in.
