LAST-MINUTE ENDORSEMENT SHAKES MICHIGAN SENATE RACE
Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat on Sunday, just two days before the November 3 midterm election, in a last-minute move that has fractured Democrats and drawn praise from President Donald Trump.
STEVENS ANNOUNCES SUPPORT AT DETROIT CHURCH
Stevens, who narrowly lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, appeared alongside Rogers at a service at Perfecting Church in Detroit. In a video posted to social media afterward, she said El-Sayed had told her she was “no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away, and he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”
She added that “who we are as Michiganders is not hate” and that she does not stand with controversial left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, with whom El-Sayed has been associated.
DISPUTE OVER ISRAEL AND ANTISEMITISM CONCERNS
The endorsement followed days of escalating public tensions between the former primary rivals, largely centered on Israel and antisemitism concerns. Stevens had pressed El-Sayed to condemn an outside group’s ad that linked U.S. military aid to Israel with rising grocery prices, which she called antisemitic.
El-Sayed rejected the ad’s message but accused Stevens of reviving primary disputes. He also indicated she was not welcome at a planned unity event that day.
Stevens has said she remains a “very proud Democrat” and that roughly 90 percent of her votes will still go to Democrats, but that her Senate vote is for Rogers because “we have to stand with country.” Her fiancé had previously said he planned to vote for Rogers.
ROGERS WELCOMES CROSS-PARTY SUPPORT
Rogers welcomed the support, calling it an honor and framing the appearance as a statement about standing together against hate and for Michigan’s future.
The Michigan seat is one of the cycle’s most competitive, with the outcome potentially affecting which party controls the Senate. Republicans currently hold a slim majority.
DEMOCRATIC LEADERS CONDEMN THE DECISION
Democrats reacted with sharp criticism. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the endorsement a “despicable betrayal.” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin described it as a betrayal of the party’s values.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Stevens had abandoned the issues she claims to care about by campaigning with Rogers, whom he described as aligned with Trump’s agenda, and urged the party not to let the move distract from the race.
TRUMP PRAISES STEVENS
Trump, speaking at a rally, praised Stevens for saying what few others would and called her move brave. He said he did not know her personally but would welcome her joining the Republican Party.
A PIVOTAL RACE HEADS INTO ELECTION DAY
The late endorsement highlights lingering divisions from the August primary and injects fresh uncertainty into a race already viewed as pivotal heading into Election Day.
Stevens has defended the decision as personal and said the weight of the ongoing conflict with El-Sayed’s campaign led her to change course.
