TAMPA, Fla. — An armed Marine Corps veteran is being credited with saving lives after confronting a gunman who attacked Citi’s Tampa-area corporate campus Wednesday, killing an employee before entering the building’s cafeteria.
Authorities say John Fraley, 38, confronted and shot the attacker within one minute of the shooting beginning. More than 3,200 people were on campus. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister called Fraley “a hero, plain and simple.” HCSO, Tampa, FL
A Threat Over Credit-Card Debt
Investigators identified the gunman as Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando. According to Chronister, Pearson was angry over collection proceedings involving approximately $2,500 in credit-card debt.
Tampa Bay 28’s investigative team examined court records showing that Citi filed a complaint October 23 alleging Pearson owed $2,556.40. The sheriff said Pearson called the collection attorney’s office on the morning of the attack and threatened to bring an AR-15 and body armor unless the case was canceled. tampabay28.com

Authorities said Pearson carried 90 rounds of ammunition. He later died at the hospital. Chronister credited Fraley’s intervention with preventing additional casualties. ABC News
