DARPA is exploring science that sounds straight out of science fiction!
Its RBC-Factory program aims to modify red blood cells to help protect service members in extreme or threatening environments—potentially including extreme temperatures, oxygen challenges, and diseases.
The approach would add protective biological materials to red blood cells without genetic modification, with the goal of providing lasting but reversible protection.
DARPA’s announcement outlines a 21-month research effort to determine which protective materials can be placed inside red blood cells without disrupting their normal function. Researchers would also develop a prototype medical device capable of modifying the cells at high rates. Independent teams would verify the results, while an ethics review would examine potential concerns surrounding the technology.
This is experimental research—not a proven “super soldier” treatment or a promise of deployment anytime soon. But the possibilities for protecting our troops are remarkable.
